ATTENTION Spurious CNG Cylinder Fitted to Vehicle Explodes at NIPCO Gas Filling Station, Airport Road, Abuja.

Abuja, 13th September 2026 — An incident involving a CNG-converted vehicle, Toyota Camry with Registration No. MAP-962 JU, occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. today at the NIPCO Gas Filling Station, Airport Road, Abuja, FCT.

Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle had been fitted with an additional spurious cylinder that was not approved or suitable for CNG use. The cylinder reportedly ruptured shortly after refueling commenced, resulting in an explosion that caused damage to the vehicle. No fatalities, injuries, or casualties were recorded in the incident.

Station personnel responded promptly in accordance with established emergency response procedures. The driver has been retained at the station to assist with ongoing enquiries, while the relevant regulatory and security authorities will be duly informed for further investigation.

Management reiterates that safety remains our highest priority. Motorists and CNG vehicle owners are strongly advised to ensure that all CNG cylinders, conversion systems, and associated components are approved, certified, and installed only by duly authorized and qualified personnel.

The use of spurious, uncertified, or unsuitable cylinders and components is strictly discouraged. We further reaffirm that CNG is a safe and reliable fuel when approved equipment, proper conversion procedures, and applicable safety standards are strictly followed.
